Valentine’s Day is a special day to celebrate love and affection for the people who matter most in your life. One of the most beloved and recognizable symbols of Valentine’s Day are Conversation Hearts, those colorful little candies with sweet messages that have been a staple of the holiday for over 150 years.

History of Conversation Hearts

The story of Conversation Hearts dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1847, Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase introduced a new kind of candy made from a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, and gelatin. These candies, which he called “NECCO wafers,” became popular throughout the United States. In 1866, Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, saw an opportunity to expand the NECCO wafer brand and began printing messages on them.

Originally, the messages were printed on paper and placed inside the candy wrappers, but by 1902, the technology had advanced enough for Chase to begin printing the messages directly on the candy. These first printed candy messages included phrases like “Be Mine,” “Kiss Me,” and “Marry Me.”

Over the years, the messages on Conversation Hearts have changed to reflect changing cultural norms and trends. Popular messages have included “Fax Me,” “Page Me,” and “Email Me” during the height of technology boom, while more recent messages have included “BFF,” “Tweet Me,” and “Text Me.”

Making Conversation Hearts

Making Conversation Hearts involves a process called hot stamping, which is a type of printing in which a heated metal die is pressed onto a foil or paper surface. In the case of Conversation Hearts, the hot stamping machine applies tiny text messages to the candy surface, which is then coated in food coloring. Each mold can produce 1,900 to 2,250 pounds of candy per day!

Where to Buy Conversation Hearts

Conversation Hearts are available at many retailers, both in-store and online, during the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day. They are often sold in small individual packets or in larger bags for sharing with loved ones. Companies like NECCO, Brach’s, and Sweethearts all manufacture their own versions of Conversation Hearts.

Alternatives to Conversation Hearts

While Conversation Hearts may be the most recognizable and nostalgic Valentine’s Day candy, there are plenty of other sweet treats to choose from. Hershey’s Kisses, Chocolate Roses, and Godiva Chocolate boxes are all classic Valentine’s Day gifts that are sure to make your loved one smile. And you can’t go wrong with a classic box of chocolates!

Conversation Hearts are a beloved tradition that adds a sweet touch to the celebration of love and affection on Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re buying them for your sweetheart or sharing them with friends and family, these little candies are a symbol of all the emotions that make the holiday special.
