Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, is celebrated as Independence Day in Texas and is recognized as a state holiday or observance in forty-five states. The holiday has gained national recognition in recent years, with calls to make it a federal holiday.
The Origin of Juneteenth
Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and informed enslaved African Americans that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued two years prior by President Abraham Lincoln. The news reached Texas two months after Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and the end of the Civil War, making Juneteenth the last place in the country to learn of their freedom.
The Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate states to be free, but it did not immediately free all enslaved people. The proclamation did not apply to slave-holding states that had remained loyal to the Union, like Maryland, Kentucky, Delaware, and Missouri. It took the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1865 to officially abolish slavery throughout the United States.
Juneteenth Celebrations
Juneteenth celebrations first began in Texas in 1866 and spread throughout the African American community. The celebration included parades, barbecues, speeches, and prayer services. African Americans often purchased new clothes for the occasion and painted fences and front doors in red, white, and blue colors to symbolize their newfound freedom.
Juneteenth celebrations declined during the Jim Crow era, but the holiday was revived during the Civil Rights era as African Americans continued to fight for their civil rights and to end racial segregation.
Juneteenth Today
Juneteenth gained national attention following the murder of George Floyd and other Black Americans by police officers, leading to a renewed interest in the holiday as a celebration of both freedom and the ongoing struggle for racial justice. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983.
Juneteenth celebrations today often include community events, parades, cookouts, and other festivities that celebrate African American culture and highlight the significance of Juneteenth as a day of remembrance and reflection. It is also a time to acknowledge the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in the United States.
